Wunderich and Bohm are now backing away from a proposed paywall that they say could hurt small businesses.
They said in a statement Wednesday that they don’t believe the “paywall is a viable option for small businesses.”
The Wall Street Journal reports that the pair have “concluded it’s a good idea” to sell their content via the Google Play and Apple platforms.
The Wall St. Journal says Google will pay for the ads that run through the app, and they will be free to run for as long as they want.
The Wunderrichs told the Journal that Google “has a good track record with its paid search ads,” but they “have a long way to go” to get there.
Google, however, said it is “making significant progress” in building a paid search service that is “significantly better” than the paid versions it offers to publishers.
The WSJ also reports that Google has “no plans” to “roll out paid search” to publishers, which could include publishers like Amazon, Microsoft, and Apple.
